Course Description:

The MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is a two year part-time course conducted as part of a four-year training programme in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. The course provides students with a comprehensive account of psychoanalytic theories developed from the work of Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion and Donald Winnicott. These theorists have contributed to the current psychoanalytic understanding of the development of the child’s mind and the significance of the parent-infant relationship in the development of the child’s internal world. Concepts such as ‘containment’ (Bion, 1969b) and ‘holding’ (Winnicott, 1963) ground the clinical work, with an emphasis on the therapist’s capacity for attention and observation, reflection and thinking rather than acting.
